In 2024, a countywide speed limit review was carried out in Dun Laoghaire Rathdown in line with “Guidelines for Setting and Managing Speed Limits in Ireland”, issued by the Department of Transport, Tourism and Sport. The process involved extensive consultation with TII, an Garda Siochana, adjoining Local Authorities and Dun Laoghaire Rathdown County Council’s Elected Members. Draft Bye Laws were on public display for 6 weeks from the 8th December 2023 to the 19th January 2024 after which submissions were considered and incorporated into the final Bye Laws where appropriate. The new Speed Limit Bye-Laws were adopted by Dun Laoghaire County Council’s Elected Members in May 2024 and came into effect across Dun Laoghaire-Rathdown County on the 11th November 2024. The effect of the latest Bye-Laws is that most local and housing estate roads will be 30km/h while most main roads will remain 50km/h. Busy town and village centres will also have a 30km/h speed limit. Benefits of the latest speed limits include reduced vehicular speeds, a decrease in the severity and number of road traffic collisions, safer and more appealing conditions for cycling and walking, less traffic noise, improved liveability of residential areas, and the enhancement of urban towns and villages.
